KidUniversity Privacy Policy
Effective October 16, 2026
KidUniversity is a learning app for children in grades 2 to 8, run by Arron Pinkney ("we"). A parent or guardian creates the family account and adds each child. We collect as little as we can, we never sell data, and there are no ads in KidUniversity.
What we collect
- From the parent: an email address and a password. The password is stored only as a secure hash; we cannot read it.
- About each child, entered by the parent: a first name or nickname and a grade level. We suggest a nickname. We do not ask for a child's last name, birthday, email address, location or contact details.
- Learning progress: which lessons and tests a child has finished, how many questions they got right, which questions they missed (so they can practice them again), the days they used the app (for streaks), stickers earned with stars, and the books they're reading.
- Ask Hoot questions, only if a parent turns it on: the questions a child types into Ask Hoot and Professor Hoot's answers, kept so the parent can read them in the Grown-ups area and delete them at any time.
- On the device only: which learner was last used and whether music and sound effects are on. This stays on the device.
- Graduation photos, on the device only: when a child finishes a grade, a grown-up can choose or take a photo to put in a cap and gown on the child's diploma. Choosing a photo is behind the grown-ups-only check. The photo is processed and kept only on that device; it is never uploaded to us or anyone else. We record only that the child graduated and when.
What we don't do
- No advertising and no ad networks.
- No third-party analytics, tracking or profiling.
- No selling or sharing of personal information.
- No chat or messaging with other people, and no way for children to share information with other users. (Ask Hoot answers come from an AI, not a person, and only when a parent turns it on.)
- No collection of location, contacts or microphone. Photos for graduation diplomas never leave the device.
How we use it
Only to run the app: to sign the parent in, to show each child their lessons, and to remember what they've finished so they can pick up where they left off.
Where it's stored
Account and progress data are stored with our database provider, Convex, which processes it on our behalf and only to run the app. Data is encrypted in transit. Read-aloud in the Library uses the speech voice built into the device, so the text being read is not sent to us. Audiobooks in the Library are streamed from the Internet Archive, which receives the device's network address when a recording plays, as with any website. Pictures in many Library picture books load from the publisher StoryWeaver's image server (hosted by Google Cloud), which likewise receives the device's network address, but nothing about the child.
KidUniversity Plus is a subscription a parent can buy in the grown-ups-only area. Payment is handled entirely by Apple or Google; we never see card details. Our subscription service, RevenueCat, receives the family account's ID and the store's purchase record so we can tell whether Plus is active. It doesn't receive any child's name or progress.
Ask Hoot (AI answers)
Ask Hoot is off until a parent turns it on for a child in the Grown-ups area. When it's on, the question the child types (with their grade and the lesson they're on, but never their name) is sent to Anthropic, the company that makes the Claude AI, to write Professor Hoot's answer. Before a question is sent we blank out anything that looks like an email address or phone number, and Hoot is instructed never to ask for personal information. Anthropic processes the question on our behalf to provide the answer; under its commercial terms it doesn't use this data to train its AI models. Answers are written by AI and can contain mistakes. Parents can read every question and answer, delete them, or turn Ask Hoot off at any time.
Children's privacy (COPPA)
We designed KidUniversity so that a parent sets up and controls the account. Children cannot create accounts, and the settings, account actions and any links that leave the app sit behind a grown-ups-only check. A parent can review, change or delete their child's information at any time, as described below.
Your choices: review, change or delete
- Change a child's grade or remove a child: open Grown-ups in the app.
- Delete everything: open Grown-ups and choose Delete account. This permanently deletes the parent account, every child profile and all progress right away.
- You can also email us at support@kiduniversity.net and we'll do it for you.
How long we keep it
Until you delete a child or the account. Deleted data is removed from our database immediately. We don't keep separate backup copies.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date above and, for important changes, tell parents in the app before they take effect.
